Irina Mozhaeva: Symphony of Colour and Light

Dubai (September 23, 2013) – Baginskaya Gallery and Studio is presenting Irina Mozhaeva: Symphony of Colour and Light. The show traces Mozhaeva’s successful experiments in painting on silk throughout her 30 years’ career. The artist works in different styles using both traditional and innovative techniques. The artworks selected for this show reflect Mozhaeva’s interest in colour therapy, interaction of light and colour complemented by rich painted textures of the medium. Mozhaeva’s artworks will be on view from October 31 through December 10, 2013. The preview is on October 30 at 8.30 pm at the presence of the artist.

Mozhaeva will showcase almost 30 works, covering all her styles: impressionism, realism, cubism, surrealism, and abstract. The paintings reflect different artistic periods, each of which offers new technique, new style, and new colour scheme. Mozhaeva keeps experimenting with types of fabric and dies of different density, which allow her to imitate both tender watercolour effect and monumental oil technique. The spectators will be surprised at the delicacy of some textures. Mozhaeva herself says that painting on silk is always an adventure, as the end result is not predictable, which explains why she is never bored and ready for new experiments.

This show will be enriched by a talk - Russian Amazons of the Avant-garde, which will take place on Saturday 2 November from 11am to 1pm. During the lecture Mozhaeva will explore the Russian art scene of the beginning of the 20th century with the focus on such prominent female artists like Goncharova, Rozanova, Exter, Popova. It is open to public for a fee of AED 100. All the proceeds received from selling of the tickets will go to Baginskaya Arts Foundation. Places are limited, please reserve your seat in advance.

About the Artist:

Irina Mozhaeva was born in 1960 in Siberia, Russia. In 1984 she graduated from Moscow Textile University, faculty of applied arts. She is a member of Moscow Union of Artists. The media she works with include silk, oil and watercolour. Irina's practice also encompasses interior design. 25 years ago Irina Mozhaeva founded an art school and until now she has been teaching silk painting using both traditional methods, and her own innovative techniques.

From 1987 to 1992 Irina Mozhaeva earned a government contract for the design of greeting cards. In 2000 she wrote a monthly column about batik in the Russian magazine 'Light. Nature and Man'. Since 2007 she has been cooperating with the Moscow Philharmonia on the project ‘We paint music’. From 2012 Irina Mozhaeva's artworks are included in the annual catalogue Russian Art Guide. In 2012 a local TV channel made a documentary about her school. Irina has been featured in a number of publications in Russia, Germany, and the UAE. Her artworks were acquired by the Kunsthalle Wurth museum in Schwabisch Hall (Germany) and form part of private collections worldwide. Irina Mozhaeva lives and works in Moscow, Russia.
