SHANNON CREES – “Dusk” and LUCIA OLIVA - “Thoughts On Stone”

at Baginskaya Gallery and Studio | September 24 – October 26, 2014

Dubai (September 15, 2014) – Baginskaya Gallery and Studio is celebrating its first anniversary with the exhibition of two artists: Shannon Crees and Lucia Oliva. The preview is on September 24 at 7.00 pm at the presence of the artists. The show will run until October 26, 2014.

Crees’ show, titled “Dusk”, is about transition and transformation. The artist covers the canvas with layers of patterns that are often reminiscent of intricate lacework. Such background, together with bold contours of her subject matter, creates the atmosphere of movement and mystery of the moment. Crees draws inspiration from nature: foliage, animals and female portraits are her favourite themes. The artist has a very vivid personal style - a mixture of graffiti with Japanese prints.

Oliva’s “Thoughts on Stone” offers the viewer abstract compositions on broken marble, remains of building activity and stone of volcanic origin. Each piece created by her has a story to tell and the titles serve as guidelines in understanding the artists’ thoughts and emotions. But even without reading, it is clear that her “thoughts” are bright, expressive, and positive. Oliva is attracted by the imperfection of the piece, which is often highlighted and intensified by bold colours. Her themes are abstracts, but very often one can find floral elements hidden in her works, which adds a mysterious element to it.

About the Artists:

Shannon Crees was born in 1979 in Sydney, Australia. Trained as a fashion designer, Crees’ artworks reflect her love to patterns. They are colourful and contain bold lines. Crees likes experimenting with different media. Most of her time Crees spends creating large-scale works and participating in “live” painting shows. She often receives commissions: Vodaphone, Absolute vodka, Pepsi Max are just few among her long list of clients. Her work was displayed in Sydney's' Museum of Contemporary Art for Australian Fashion week. She was the only Australian artist invited to participate in the high profile line up of ‘the best graffiti artists in the world’ at Banksy’s cans festival 2 in London. Crees was the winner of Leichhardt councils 'Wall to Wall' competition, with an 80 square meter mural, and has featured on television shows such as ‘Getaway’, ‘The Apprentice’, as well as a profile on the ABC News art segment.

Lucia Oliva is an emerging self-taught artist from Italy. Having a degree in criminal law, she abandoned it many years ago for arts. Together with her husband she founded an artistic company that organises historically themed and cultural events. Oliva has been drawing and painting from early age, but only recently decided to take it to a new level. She chose stone and marble as her favourite media, which she covers by acrylic.  Oliva was invited to showcase on different occasions, had solo shows and participated in a number of group exhibitions in Italy, UAE and Bahrain. Oliva was a resident artist in Art Hub Abu Dhabi, one of her works was auctioned at a charity event at Ritz Carlton Dubai, in 2014 she displayed her work at Sikka.
